Preformed Metal Crowns - Hall Technique course for Dental Practice



This session is about the Hall Technique, a new method for managing carious primary molars.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- Describe the Hall Technique and the steps for carrying it out
- Describe the clinical implications of the ecological plaque hypothesis
- Discuss the merits and limitations of a Cochrane review as a method for appraising evidence for a clinical intervention
- Discuss the evidence base for the Hall Technique and know where to find more information on it
- Describe its indications/contraindications and advantages/disadvantages
- Evaluate clinical situations and correctly identify when the Hall Technique would be an appropriate/inappropriate restorative choice and be able to state why
The Hall Technique is a novel method of managing carious primary molars by cementing preformed metal crowns (PMC), also known as stainless steel crowns, over them without local anaesthesia, caries removal or tooth preparation of any kind
Before commencing this session you should:
- Complete the e-Den session in Module 8 Restoration of Teeth/Caries/Aetiology of Caries (141-0296)
- Have a basic knowledge of behavioural and child development factors which influence the delivery of care for the child
Nicola Innes, PhD, BDS(Hons), BSc, BMSc (Hons), MFGDP, MFDS (RCS Eng), RGN, graduated as a dentist from Dundee Dental School having already trained and worked as a Registered General Nurse, studied for a Life Sciences BSc at Napier University and obtained a first class honours degree in Molecular and Cellular Pathology.
After working in General Dental Practice in Tayside for seven years, Nicola joined Dundee Dental School in 2005, where she is currently a Clinical Lecturer in Paediatric Dentistry.


Dafydd Evans graduated from the London Dental Hospital, Whitechapel, in 1978. After five years as a general dental practitioner, he spent three years in the community dental service, with a year out to complete an SHO post at Bristol Dental Hospital.
Having obtained the FDS, he joined the Children’s Department, Glasgow Dental Hospital & School as a clinical lecturer in 1989, completing higher training in paediatric dentistry there, and obtaining a PhD, before joining Dundee Dental Hospital & School in 1995 as Senior Lecturer/Honorary Consultant in Paediatric Dentistry.
He has chaired two national guideline development groups covering the prevention and management of dental caries in children. His main research interest is developing approaches based on the biological management of dental caries (rather than the purely surgical approach), which will be effective, but more acceptable to both patients and dentists. He has been involved in randomised control clinical trials in primary care involving restorative materials, Hall crowns and the use of dental lasers.
