Practical Issues in Neuropathic Pain Medicine course
This session reviews the pharmacology of some of the common drugs used to treat neuropathic pain and considers the practical aspects of using these drugs, including a review of the current evidence for their use.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- Explain how neuropathic pain medications work when used in chronic pain medicine
- Describe the problems and side-effects associated with use of antineuropathic agents generally
- Describe the problems and side-effects associated with use of antineuropathic agents in special populations
The two major classes of drugs used in the treatment of neuropathic pain are antidepressants and anticonvulsants.
Since qualifying from Edinburgh in 1991, John worked for a few years in general medicine before training in anaesthesia and pain medicine in SE Scotland. This included research in pain medicine and a year as a pain fellow in Auckland New Zealand. He has been a consultant in Edinburgh since 2004.
His MD thesis was entitled ‘The role of the NMDA receptor in neuropathic pain’. John’s pain interests include neuropathic pain and post-amputation pain.

Since qualifying from Madras Medical College, India in 2001, Shankar did achieved his MD in anaesthesiology at PGIMER, Chandigarh, India. Subsequently, he completed his anaesthetic training in Edinburgh and his Advanced Pain training at Imperial College, London. He successfully completed his FRCA, FFPMRCA and also EDRA examinations and is now a Locum Consultant.
Shankar’s professional interests include management of chronic neuropathic pain, neuromodulation, and ultrasound-guided anaesthetic and pain interventions. He also has a strong interest in research, academics, education and quality improvement. He is currently perusing a PhD in chronic pain at Queen Mary University, London.
