This session describes the principles of the pharmacological management of cancer pain including a review of strong opioids and adjuvant analgesics.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • List the strong opioids that exist and how they are selected in clinical practice
  • List the adverse effects of strong opioids
  • Explain the concept of opioid switching and the relative potencies between each of the strong opioids and morphine
  • Define an adjuvant agent and describe the different classes of these drugs
  • Describe the indications for the use of adjuvant agent selection and use in clinical practice

Moderate to severe pain in patients with a diagnosis of cancer is common and affects 80% patients with advanced cancer.
