Pharmacological Cancer Pain Management course for Medical Doctors
This session describes the principles of the pharmacological management of cancer pain including a review of strong opioids and adjuvant analgesics.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- List the strong opioids that exist and how they are selected in clinical practice
- List the adverse effects of strong opioids
- Explain the concept of opioid switching and the relative potencies between each of the strong opioids and morphine
- Define an adjuvant agent and describe the different classes of these drugs
- Describe the indications for the use of adjuvant agent selection and use in clinical practice
Moderate to severe pain in patients with a diagnosis of cancer is common and affects 80% patients with advanced cancer.
Jayne Wood has been a Consultant in Palliative Medicine at The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust since December 2009. Jayne is the lead for education in the department and she is also the Training Programme Director for Core Medical Trainees across the trust.
