This session discusses the concept of personality disorders, and considers some of the commonest presentations in primary care. It explores how the dynamics of personality within a team, and within the consulting room, may affect the delivery of care and offers practical suggestions on how to mitigate these risks.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Define, and distinguish between, personality disorder traits and disorders
  • Identify features of the commonest personality disorders and apply this information to clinical episodes
  • Identify prominent personality traits in yourself, colleagues and patients
  • Develop strategies for dealing with complex patients with distress due to personality disorders

Carrie Ladd,
General Practitioner

Dr Ladd is a NHS GP working in Oxfordshire. She qualified in 2003 from the University of Southampton and worked in a variety of hospital and general practice posts before gaining MRCGP in 2011. She has been working part-time in the area since and has combined her practice work with a RCGP Clinical Fellow post in Perinatal Mental Health from April 2015 to March 2017. Her other special interest areas include Women’s Health, Contraception, Sexual Health and Digital Innovation.
