This session provides an overview of basic flap surgery in the management of periodontitis.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • List the indications and rationale for carrying out periodontal flap surgery
  • Explain the difference between pocket elimination and pocket reduction surgery
  • List and describe the stages in periodontal flap surgery
  • Describe postoperative care

Periodontal surgery is the clinical procedure which enables direct surgical access to the root surfaces of teeth affected by periodontal attachment loss where affected root surfaces remain subgingival. Direct access allows visual confirmation that the root surfaces have been effectively debrided.

Entry Requirements / Prerequisites

Before commencing this session you should have knowledge of:

  • The aetiology and pathology of periodontitis
  • The clinical management of periodontitis

You should also have practical experience of root surface debridement in patients with periodontitis.

Ravi is a consultant in restorative dentistry and a specialist periodontist. He qualified at Guy’s Hospital Dental School then continued his training in Periodontal and Restorative training at Guy’s, The Royal Dental Hospital and Glasgow Dental Hospital.
