This session will present an overview of the ways in which dementia is perceived and talked about, including misperceptions about who may be affected by dementia. The subsequent impact that this has on peoples access to and use of health and social care services is considered.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Discuss the stigma, myths and stereotypes associated with dementia
  • Describe the prevelance and impact of a diagnosis of dementia for younger people
  • Explain the importance of equal access to dementia assessment and diagnosis for people from diverse communities

Dementia is a condition affecting over 50 million people worldwide, characterised by problems with cognition. However, the way in which dementia is perceived and represented in society can have a significant negative impact on people living with and touched by the experience of dementia.

  • Have basic knowledge of the signs, symptoms and causes of dementia
