Patient Assessment For Conscious Sedation course for Dental Practice



This session aims to provide an overview of the requirements necessary when selecting patients to undergo conscious sedation within the primary care setting. It discusses the importance of the ASA classification, patient selection, medical and dental history and the consent processes involved.
Learning objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- explain the aims of the sedation assessment visit
- define each ASA classification and explain its importance in defining the suitability of a patient for treatment with conscious sedation
- describe the type of patient information gained at the assessment visit
- describe patient preparation prior to conscious sedation
The importance of completing an assessment of a patient prior to offering sedation should not be underestimated. This session explores the methods and reasons why this should be completed.


Before commencing this session you should have knowledge of:
- pathological and physiological disease processes and their relevance to sedation
- pharmacology of benzodiazepines and nitrous oxide
Chris is currently working as a Senior Dental Officer for Newcastle upon Tyne hospitals which involves treating nervous individuals, children and those with special needs. He is also involved with the supervision of dental students in an outreach programme from Newcastle Dental School.
Chris qualified from Newcastle Dental School in 2001 with a BDS and merit in child dental health. In November 2009 he was awarded a Postgraduate Diploma in Conscious Sedation, also from Newcastle Dental School.
