The session will explore the principles, practical application and various ways of carrying out partner notification (PN) when dealing with sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

Learning objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • 9.4.1 Identify the principles of partner notification when dealing with sexually transmitted infections
  • 9.4.2 Outline the different methods of partner notification and decide when they are appropriate
  • 9.4.3 Describe partner notification effectively including discussing a strategy with the individual as well as ways to overcome resistance and follow up

Partner notification (PN) is also known as contact tracing. It is a process whereby the sexual partners of an individual (the index patient) diagnosed with an STI, are informed that they may have been exposed to an infection.

Dr Vinod Kumar is a consultant in Integrated Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare at Midlands Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, Leicester. He underwent his specialist clinical training in Community Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare (CSRH) at the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS foundation trust, having previously worked as an Obstetrics and Gynaecology (O&G) trainee in East Midlands. He received his PhD in protein metabolism from the University of Nottingham in 2010 and has published numerous articles in peer reviewed journals. He is a member of the Exam Committee of the Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare (FSRH). He is a Faculty Registered Trainer (FRT) for Diploma/LoCs and has a special interest in complex contraception.
