Paediatric Pain - Assessment and Management
This unit of study is designed to enhance the knowledge of nurses who care for infants, children and adolescents experiencing pain. The themes include pain physiology, types of pain including; acute, chronic, cancer, and procedural pain, and developmentally appropriate pain assessment. Pain assessment tools are evaluated and both pharmacological and non-pharmacological pain management are explored.
Pain management in the paediatric setting is complex and nurses are challenged to consider management in light of current best practice, cultural diversity and belief systems.

Theme 1: Introduction – a historical and global view
Discuss the mechanisms of pain and the process of pain detection, transmission and perception in infants, children and young people.
Theme 2: Understanding pain
Identify various types of pain and discuss the underlying pathophysiology in infants, children and young people.
Theme 3: Pain assessment
Critically evaluate multidimensional pain assessment tools and their application in infants, children and young people in the clinical setting.
Theme 4: Pain management
Evaluate contemporary pain management strategies for infants, children and young people in a variety of contexts in accordance with evidence-based clinical guidelines.
Theme 5: Pain management (non-pharmacologtical)
Reflect on your own values, beliefs and culture in relation to pain and discuss how this may impact pain assessment and management in infants, children and young people.
