Paediatric Emergency Nursing
This unit of study has been designed to enhance the specialist knowledge and skills required by nurses who care for critically ill or injured paediatric patients presenting to the emergency department. Themes covered within the unit of study include; an introduction to professional practice for emergency nurses, triage and physical assessment, common medical presentations, trauma, mental health presentations and the special needs of infants in the emergency department. This unit of study challenges students to reflect on, and develop their nursing practice using contemporary evidence and industry endorsed clinical practice guidelines.

The student must be working in an emergency department that has a paediatric case mix
Theme 1: Professional issues in paediatric emergency nursing
Critically review the effects of advanced nursing practice roles on the outcomes of infants, children and young people within the Emergency Department (ED)
Theme 2: Patient assessment
Explain the role of triage in prioritising management of sick infants, children & young people
Theme 3: Triage
Utilise the Primary and Secondary survey framework to guide resuscitation and stabilisation of acutely unwell infants, children and young people who present to the ED
Theme 4: The critically unwell child
Analyse the presenting pathophysiology of critically ill or injured infants, children and young people to inform appropriate clinical management strategies
Theme 5: The critically injured child
Critically appraise local practice guidelines against contemporary research, supporting an evidence based approach to nursing management of infants, children and young people in ED
Theme 6: Child & adolescent mental health - acute presentations
Reflect on how personal values & beliefs about culture may affect the equitable and culturally respectful delivery of healthcare in emergency departments
