This session provides an introduction to basic principles regarding the pharmacology of pain medication and the key principles regarding the medicolegal framework for physiotherapists incorporating: advising patients on medications, supply and administration under patient group directions and non-medical prescribing medications, within their clinical practice.

By the end of the session you should be able to:

  • Discuss the differences regarding training and medicolegal framework between:
    • Advising
    • Supply and administration under patient group directions (PGD)
    • Non-medical prescribing
  • Describe the main principles and considerations when advising patients regarding their use of medications within scope of physiotherapy practice
  • Identify the main groups of pain control medication and the different legal implications of:
    • Over the counter (OTC)
    • Prescription only medications (POM)
    • Controlled drugs (CD)
    • Off-label usage
    • Unlicensed usage

Dave Baker,
Physiotherapy Extended Scope Practitioner

Dave qualified as a non-medical prescriber in 2008. Subsequently he has held clinical extended scope practitioner posts and taught on a range of MSc Modules including Medicines Management, Pain and Analgesia, and Non-Medical Prescribing. He continues to work as visiting lecturer on university post-graduate courses and as an external examiner on non-medical prescribing programs. Dave represented the Physiotherapy profession on the 2016 revision of the document ‘Competency Framework for Prescribers’.

In 2008 Dave developed a specialist Non-medical Prescribing led clinic for Acute and Chronic MSK Pain in Primary Care, winning a Service Innovation Award. Dave was recently appointed for a 3 year post as specialist advisor to NICE’s interventional procedures programme. Dave has special interest in image guided injection therapy for MSK conditions and is the chairman of the Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Orthopaedic Medicine & Injection Therapy (ACPOMIT) since 2016. Dave was recently appointed as honorary lecturer at Brunel University.

Pip White,
Professional Adiser at the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy

Pip is a Professional Adviser at the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP). She completed her MA in Healthcare Law in 2012 with research into the 1968 Medicines Act and modern allied health professional medicines practice. Pip represented the CSP on the NHS England Project Board, which secured independent prescribing rights for physiotherapists and podiatrists in 2013, and subsequently secured limited Controlled Drug prescribing for both professions in 2015. She was also part of the teams which produced the AHPF Curriculum Framework for all Prescribers, and the first edition of the RPC Competency Framework for Prescribers. She has also been an adviser to the Chief Health Professions Officer’s Medicines Management Programme as additional allied health professions have secured their own prescribing rights.

Pip has produced several CSP publications relating to medicines use and physiotherapy practice, including Practice Guidance for Physiotherapy Prescribers. She has had an extensive clinical career in the NHS and the military and has held Extended Scope Practitioner posts. She continues to work clinically in MSK services in Northamptonshire.
