Overview of Cleft Lip and Palate course for Dental Practice
This session will give you a basic understanding of the prevalence, aetiology, developmental background and principles of treatment of cleft lip and/or palate (CL/P).
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- Explain the prevalence and aetiology of CL/P
- Describe different forms of CL/P
- Explain the developmental basis of CL/P
- Describe the dental manifestations associated with CL/P
- Outline the principles of management of CL/P
Clefts involving the lip and/or palate (CL/P) represent some of the most common congenital anomalies to affect the craniofacial region. They arise during the first trimester of pregnancy as a result of failed fusion involving the frontonasal and maxillary processes of the early face, and encompass a spectrum of conditions
Before commencing this session you should:
- Have knowledge of normal craniofacial and dental development
Maisa completed her undergraduate training in 2002 at Oulu Dental Institute, Finland. Following her graduation she practiced in a number of healthcare centres and in an evening private practice in Finland. Following moving to the UK in 2004 she worked in a dental practice setting in Somerset, carried out maxillofacial SHO at the Bart’s and Royal London Hospital and completed her PhD in Craniofacial Development at King’s College London 2009 under the supervision of Professor Paul Sharpe and Professor Martyn Cobourne. Maisa completed her MSc with distinction and Specialist in Orthodontics training in King’s College London 2011. She is currently working at King’s College London as an NIHR trainee and at Guy’s, King’s College and William Harvey Hospital as a Senior SpR.
Martyn is Professor of Orthodontics at King’s College London and Hon Consultant in Orthodontics at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Foundation Trust. He currently runs a laboratory-based research group, which investigates molecular mechanisms underlying craniofacial disorders, including cleft lip and palate and the regulation of tooth number. He is Training Program Director in Orthodontics at Guy’s Hospital.
