This session discusses the purpose of orthodontic retention, indicators for retainers and when and for how long they should be worn. It also describes the different types of removable and fixed retainers available.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Explain why orthodontic retainers are necessary
  • Describe removable orthodontic retainers
  • Describe fixed orthodontic retainers
  • Identify the advantages and disadvantages of each retainer type

Orthodontic retention is the use of a fixed or removable appliance to maintain the relative position of teeth in the same and opposing arches, following orthodontic treatment.

Entry Requirements / Prerequisites

Before commencing this session you should have:

  • Completed the e-Den session 7 Management of Developing Dentition/Contemporary Orthodontics/Functional Orthodontic Appliances
  • Completed the e-Den session 7 Management of Developing Dentition/Contemporary Orthodontics/Fixed Orthodontic Appliances
  • Basic knowledge of the histology of the periodontium
