Oral Hygiene Methods course for Dental Practice



This session describes the rationale for different oral hygiene techniques and highlights the importance of producing a personalised oral hygiene programme for each patient.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- Describe the purpose of effective personal oral hygiene measures
- List the factors to consider when choosing an interdental cleaning technique for an individual patient
- Describe a subgingival toothbrushing technique
The role of dental bacterial biofilm as an aetiological factor in the development of inflammatory periodontal diseases, is well established.


Elaine carried out her graduate periodontal training at the University of Washington in Seattle. She was a Consultant in Periodontology at the Eastman Dental Hospital in London for 19 years and has always been heavily involved in postgraduate training at the Eastman, for the British Society of Periodontology and for the Royal College of Surgeons in London both in the UK and internationally.
She is co-editor of the Young Practitioners Guide to Periodontology, produced by the BSP and has published papers on metronidazole in the management of periodontal disease and periodontal crown lengthening surgical techniques. She has contributed to a Cochrane Review on periodontal regeneration. Currently Elaine works in a multidisciplinary private practice in central London.
