Delivering therapeutic agents
Session overview
Description
This session will discuss the appropriate assessment of emergency patients with dento-alveolar infections; providing information on antimicrobial resistance, scientific evidence and guidelines for appropriate use of antibiotics in the management of infections.

Learning objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • list the problems associated with the inappropriate prescribing of antibiotics and the indicators for prescribing
  • describe how to assess an emergency patient presenting with a dento-alveolar infection and manage their treatment appropriately

Prerequisites
Before commencing this session you should:

  • know how to use the British National Formulary
  • be aware of drug interactions and be able to write a prescription

Approximately 41 million antimicrobials are prescribed in primary care in England each year.

39.2 million prescriptions for oral antibiotics are dispensed in the primary care setting.

General dental practitioners account for 9% of all oral antibiotics prescribed in primary care.

Evidence linking antibiotic use in humans to resistance is clear and overwhelming.
