Assessing the intra-oral soft tissues
Session overview
Description
This session describes the processes for performing intra-oral examinations, and the reasons for carrying them out.

Learning objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • explain the importance of thorough intra-oral examination
  • describe how to examine different parts of the mouth

Prerequisites
Before commencing this session you should have:

  • basic experience of dental practice
  • completed the e-Den session 1 Patient assessment/Assessment methods and techniques/Performing an extra-oral and facial examination

Intra-oral examination is an essential part of analysing a patient's presenting complaint. The nature of the presenting condition, and signs of underlying medical conditions, may be identified by thorough clinical examination.

A systematic process for examination ensures that the mouth is examined thoroughly, and that no part is overlooked.

In this session, you will see the value of intra-oral examinations and receive guidance on how to perform them.
