Obtaining Feedback for Personal Development course for GPs
This session considers methods of obtaining feedback from others in order to increase self awareness and assist with personal development planning. This session supports the development of leadership in clinical settings.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- Detail the principal methods of obtaining feedback from others about personal impact and performance
- Identify and critically evaluate different feedback methods
- List means of using information from such feedback and securing appropriate support
- Describe the link to the Medical/Clinical Leadership Competency Framework
- Demonstrate your contribution to leadership by identifying how to develop your own skills at giving feedback
The term 'feedback' was coined by engineers in the 1940s to describe the procedure where engineers check to see if a space rocket is following its flight path and if not, to guide it back. Since then, the term has become widely used in education.
After graduating from Leicester Medical School in 2006, Jenny undertook Foundation Training and subsequently decided to specialize in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care, completing an academic Acute Care Common Stem (ACCS) programme and post as an Honorary Education Fellow.
She is involved in both undergraduate and postgraduate education, with particular interests in feedback and supporting trainees in difficulty. She is also interested in mentoring in medical education and is trained as an Egan mentor.
Jenny is an author for the e-Lead and e-ICM programmes.
