This session will discuss when to carry out planned extraction of primary and permanent teeth.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Describe the effects of early loss of deciduous teeth
  • Discuss how early loss of deciduous teeth may be utilised to reduce developing malocclusion
  • Identify clinical situations where early loss of deciduous teeth may be utilised
  • Evaluate treatment effects of deciduous tooth extraction

Early loss of deciduous teeth may lead to space loss and resultant impaction of the permanent successor, alteration of the centrelines and overeruption of opposing teeth.

Entry Requirements / Prerequisites

Before commencing this session you should:

  • Complete the e-Den session in Module 7 Management of the Developing Dentition/Assessment for Interceptive Treatment/Abnormal Dental Development in the Mixed Dentition (141-0284)
  • Have a basic knowledge of pre-eruptive tooth development and development of the dentition

Toby Gillgrass,
Dentist

Toby qualified as a dentist from the University of Edinburgh in 1991. After working through house officer rotations and general practice he became a Lecturer in oral medicine and Radiology at the University of Otago, New Zealand. On returning to the UK, his specialist training in Orthodontics started at Glasgow University followed by a fixed term training appointment in Newcastle. He took up his first Consultant position in the Edinburgh Post-Graduate institute where he became head of department and Programme Director for Orthodontic Training in the South of Scotland.

Toby left Edinburgh to became orthodontic lead for the Greater Glasgow and Clyde Cleft Team in 2006. He is currently convenor of the orthodontic specialist Group of CLEFTSiS, The Cleft Lip and Palate service for Scotland, the first managed clinical network in Scotland.
