Non Drug-induced Gingival Overgrowth course for Dental Practice
This session describes the clinical appearance, histopathology and management of gingival enlargement or overgrowth.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you should be able to:
- Recognise the clinical appearance of the most prevalent causes of gingival enlargement
- Identify the histopathology of gingival enlargement
- List and describe the management options of such cases
Gingival enlargement or overgrowth is a change that may present for different reasons and may occur both locally and generally. It is also frequently observed in patients taking a range of drugs, such as phenytoin, cyclosporin and calcium-channel blockers.
Before commencing this session you should have completed the following sessions in e-Den Module 04 Periodontal Disease and Management:
- Aetiology of Periodontal Disease/Classification of Periodontitis (141-0166)
- Aetiology of Periodontal Disease/Micro and Macro Anatomy of the Periodontal Tissues (141-0160)
Peter Heasman BDS MDS PhD FDSRCPS DRDRCS is Professor of Periodontology and Honorary Consultant in Restorative Dentistry at Newcastle School of Dental Sciences. He has published papers on the pathogenesis of periodontal diseases, risk factors for periodontal diseases, genetic aspects of aggressive periodontal diseases, clinical trial design, ethics of clinical trials, pharmacological treatments for periodontal diseases, and the benefits of smoking cessation.
He is a past winner of the British Society of Periodontology’s Sir Wilfred Fish Research Prize. His professional interests include research ethics and medico-legal aspects of periodontology.
Andrew Steele BDS MFDS graduated from Queens’ University, Belfast with a Bachelor of Science in Anatomy in 2006 and from a BDS degree in 2008. He completed his MFDS examinations in 2009 and is currently undertaking general professional training in Newcastle. He has an interest in entering an academic career in Restorative Dentistry.
