Neonatal Intensive Care
The purpose of this unit is to extend previously acquired knowledge and consider the health needs of babies and families admitted to a neonatal intensive care unit. Neonates are admitted because of their prematurity or because they require ongoing support for acute illness, complex conditions, surgery, or post-surgical convalescence. This unit of study is comprised of four themes. The first theme covers the family-centred, neurodevelopmentally supportive assessment and management of prematurely born babies and their families, with the second theme providing a detailed overview of commonly experienced ongoing health challenges. The third theme outlines diagnoses warranting admission of the unwell term infant, while the fourth theme describes common neonatal surgical interventions.
Students choosing this specialty elective must be employed in a neonatal intensive care unit.
