This session was reviewed by Khyati Bakhai and last updated in October 2021.

Learning objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • describe the purpose of the 6 to 8 week baby check
  • establish a routine for undertaking a 6 to 8 week baby check
  • describe an approach for tackling some of the common problems that can occur during the 6 to 8 week baby check
  • describe common or serious abnormalities found in infants

A newborn infant should undergo its first complete physical examination within 24 hours of birth. This is normally carried out by a trained midwife or paediatrician. A blood spot screening test should be performed by the midwife at around 5 to 8 days, and a hearing screening test should also be carried out within the first week.
