Neglect in the Disabled Child course for GPs
Children and young people with disabilities often have very complex health requirements and are automatically classed as being 'children in need'.
From a safeguarding perspective, children and young people with disabilities require particular vigilance to ensure that any instances of abuse and neglect are not missed.
Learning objectives
By the end of this session, you will be able to:
- identify the key features of neglect in a disabled child
- judge what information on a child and family should be shared with others
- list the local systems and resources available to support a child in need
- describe the role of the named doctor for child protection in providing support and advice
- describe the health needs of a disabled child and the potential implications of failing to meet those needs
Before commencing this session you should:
- have completed equivalent uniagency or multiagency training at Level 2
- have completed the eLfH Safeguarding Children Level 3 introductory session
- be working with children, young people and their parents or carers and be contributing to assessing, planning, intervening and evaluating the needs of a child or young person and parenting capacity, where there are safeguarding or child protection concerns
