This session explains how to identify, assess and manage chronic musculoskeletal pain conditions in children.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • List the most important types of chronic musculoskeletal pain (CMSKP) in children
  • List the important red flags that indicate the need for investigation or referral to specialist teams
  • Describe diagnostic criteria for childhood complex regional pain syndrome
  • Describe the principles of assessment of CMSKP in children
  • Identify the main elements of management of CMSKP in children

Musculoskeletal (MSK) pain is a common feature of childhood, accounting for approximately two-thirds of all the pains that are reported.

Jacqui Clinch,
Consultant in Paediatric Rheumatology at the Bristol Royal Hospital for Children

Jacqui is a consultant paediatric rheumatologist at Bristol Royal Children’s Hospital and medical lead for Child and Adolescent pain at the Bath Centre for Pain Services.

She has significant clinical experience with disease and non-disease related pain conditions, leading the medical development of a unique national rehabiltation centre for young people with pain.

With an academic interest in paediatric musculoskeletal pain syndromes, hypermobility and bone disease, she is widely published, is an active research lead within University of Bristol and lectures extensively.

Jacqui is a content author for the e-PAIN project.

Richard Howard,
Consultant, Anaesthesia & Pain Medicine, Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children

Richard is involved in clinical pain management, clinical and laboratory research, and has lectured and published extensively on the subject of pain mechanisms and management.

He is the Clinical Lead of the children’s Pain Management Service at Great Ormond Street. He is a founder member of the UCL Paediatric Pain Research Centre; a collaboration between clinicians and scientists, an Examiner for the UK Fellowship of the Faculty of Pain Medicine and Chair of the Medicines for Children Research Network (MCRN) Pain & Palliative Care Clinical Studies Group.

Richard is a module editor and content author of sessions of the e-PAIN project.
