Multimodal Analgesia course for Nurses
This session describes the rationale and application of using combinations of analgesic medicines.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- Define multimodal analgesia
- Explain the rationale and principles of multimodal analgesia
- List the principles of the WHO analgesic ladder, its uses and controversies
- Summarize the steps within the WHO analgesic ladder
- Describe the treatment options for mild, moderate and severe pain in both adults and children in relation to the WHO analgesic ladder
Multimodal analgesia is a term that is generally used to describe the management of pain using a combination of analgesic drugs with differing pharmacological modes of action.
Sarah has been based at the Hayward House Specialist Palliative Care Unit, Nottingham since 2000.
She has also worked in hospital clinical pharmacy and pharmacy sterile production management. She has a pharmacy clinical diploma and a postgraduate certificate for managing health services.
She is senior editor of the 5th edition of the Palliative Care Formulary and an author for the chapters on continuous subcutaneous infusions, the compatibility charts and drugs via feeding tubes. She is responsible for updating the www.palliativedrugs.com website with the latest information relating to drug use in palliative care.
