This session describes the prevalence of sports-related injuries and the provision of mouthguards to help prevent dental injuries.

Learning objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • list the advantages and disadvantages of different types of mouthguard
  • describe the clinical and laboratory techniques involved in mouthguard provision
  • identify the features of custom made mouthguards

Although dental injury has been recognised as an occupational hazard for sportsmen and women for many years, its management 'in the field' remains poor.
