Medico-legal Considerations Associated with Conscious Sedation course for Dental Practice
This session will consider consent, standards of practice and professional conduct in relation to conscious sedation for dentistry.
Learning objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- explain the principles of consent for conscious sedation in dentistry
- describe the importance of appropriate standards of practice for conscious sedation
- discuss the need for the presence of a second appropriately trained person to assist the clinician
- list situations where, during the provision of conscious sedation, care and treatment may fall below an acceptable standard
- list 4 concerns regarding the provision of sedation which have been raised by the General Dental Council Professional Conduct Committee
It is essential for those working in the healthcare professions to have a sound understanding of the legal principles which govern their practice. Within the field of conscious sedation, knowledge of regulatory, statutory and ethical standards is essential.

Dr Kathy Wilson is an Associate Specialist in Dental Sedation at Newcastle Dental Hospital.
Currently lecturing in the field of dental sedation and special care dentistry at undergraduate and postgraduate level, Kathy has extensive clinical experience in management of the anxious dental patient.
