This session provides an overview of some of the clinically important cardiac arrhythmias you may come across as a dental practitioner.

Learning objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • describe the cardiac conduction system
  • interpret ECGs of different types of cardiac arrhythmia
  • list the cardiac arrhythmias that may present in dental practice
  • recognise the impact of cardiac arrhythmias on the provision of dental care
  • recommend methods of treating cardiac arrhythmias

Prerequisites
Before commencing this session you should have knowledge of:

  • basic cardiovascular anatomy and physiology

Cardiac arrhythmias are important causes of morbidity and mortality.

In this session, we will outline the basic principles of cardiac arrhythmias and provide a brief overview of electrocardiograph (ECG) interpretation.

We will cover atrial fibrillation and heart block and highlight the ways in which they may impact your dental practice.
