This session outlines the presentation and the variety of methods for management of non-vital teeth presenting with an open apex.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Classify the stages of root development
  • List the causes of an open apex
  • State why teeth with open apices can be difficult to manage
  • Describe the various protocols available for treatment

Trauma to the developing dentition can result in the loss of vitality of permanent teeth. As the development of the root is stunted, this can result in teeth with thin dentine walls and a wide apex
