This session will cover the principles of treating an adolescent with an eating disorder, including some of the physical and legal considerations.

Learning objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Explain the principles of developing a treatment plan for an adolescent with an eating disorder, and communicate effectively with all the people involved to implement it
  • Manage risk in eating disorders and recognise how risks change with treatment
  • Be aware of the refeeding syndrome and issues related to refeeding in underweight adolescents
  • Explain the principles of individual and family psychotherapeutic approaches in the management of eating disorders
  • Be aware of the legal and ethical frameworks in which treatment of eating disorders is carried out

The goal of treatment is to help young people affected by EDs to live more successfully with their illness and thus lead a more normal life, achieving as much as possible normal physical, social and psychological development until recovery is achieved.

Dasha Nicholls,
Consultant Child and Adolescent Psyschiatrist

Dasha Nicholls is Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist and Joint Head of Feeding and Eating Disorders service at Great Ormond Street Hospital. Her clinical work is concerned with aspects of problem feeding and eating disorders in children aged 0-16 years, ranging from failure to thrive to early onset anorexia nervosa, as well as the treatment of childhood obesity. She is actively engaged in research, writing, lecturing and teaching, nationally and internationally.

Tony Jaffa,
Consultant in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry

Tony Jaffa retired from the NHS in 2012 after 22 years as a full time Consultant in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, mostly in Cambridge. Particular interests included eating disorders, inpatient psychiatry and service development. He currently practices part time in the private and voluntary sectors in London.
