This session outlines the side-effects and complications of intrauterine device (IUD) and intrauterine system (IUS) use. It discusses both immediate side-effects on insertion and problems that arise with long-term use. It also outlines the management plan when a complication arises.

Learning objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • 5.3.1 Describe management options for a woman with side-effects or complications after IUD/IUS fitting

The intrauterine device (IUD) and intrauterine system (IUS) are increasingly popular methods of contraception. Along with the contraceptive injection and subdermal implant they are termed long-acting reversible contraceptive (LARC) methods.

Anita Maini,
Associate Specialist in Sexual & Reproductive Health

Anita has been working in Sexual and Reproductive Health since 2002.

She obtained her LOCs in Subdermal Implants, Intrauterine Techniques and Medical Education. She then obtained her Membership (MFSRH) in 2009. She has a keen interest in both GUM and Colposcopy and does clinics on a weekly basis.

Anita has been involved in both undergraduate and post-graduate teaching as a Faculty Registered Trainer (2005 - ongoing) and was appointed as a Faculty Regional Training Advisor (2015- 2019).

In 2016 Anita was involved in writing questions for the eKA Test which is required for the Diploma in FSRH. With the e-SRH update, Anita has been involved in writing the Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare e-learning material and is co-author of 3 sessions.
