Management of Trauma in the Primary Dentition course for Dental Practice
This session covers the examination, diagnosis, management and follow-up of dental trauma in the primary dentition, and discusses the similarities and differences between it and trauma to the secondary dentition.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge of examination techniques for pre-cooperative children
- Diagnose different types of dentoalveolar trauma in the primary dentition and describe appropriate management
- Recognise the sequelae of trauma in the primary dentition
- List the differences between trauma in the primary and permanent dentition
Management of dentoalveolar trauma in children is distressing for both child and parent, and is often difficult for the dentist.

Peter started his specialist and academic training in Paediatric Dentistry in 2000 and has been in Leeds ever since. His PhD was in the field of dental trauma and was completed in 2009. It included chapters investigating the design, development and assessment of a computer database for dental trauma (CDDT), a multi-centre randomised controlled trial of two root canal medicaments for the management of avulsed and replanted teeth and a Cochrane review of the avulsion literature.
In 2009, he took a six month sabbatical working at the Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne before returning to England to take up a joint academic appointment with University of Leeds and Bradford and Airedale Salaried Dental Service.
Rachael graduated from the Leeds Dental Institute and subsequently completed vocational training in the Northern Deanery. She has since worked as a paediatric dentistry senior house officer at the University Dental Hospital of Manchester and the Charles Clifford Dental Hospital, Sheffield. Currently, she is working for the Bradford and Airedale Salaried Dental Service.
Stacey graduated from the Leeds Dental Institute and completed her vocational training in the Yorkshire Deanery. She is now undertaking her DF2 training which is split between Bradford and Airedale Salaried Dental Service and maxillofacial surgery at Bradford Royal Infirmary.
