This session describes how to recognise important diagnostic features of malignant and premalignant oral lesions allowing early and appropriate referral to specialist care.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • List the different stages used when carrying out a basic head and neck examination
  • Identify patients who are potentially at higher risk of head and neck cancer
  • List the important features of extra-oral malignancy
  • List important features of intra-oral malignancy and premalignant lesions
  • State when to refer for specialist investigations and treatment

The oral cavity can develop a wide variety of lesions, most of these are benign and are common. The dental surgeon is in an excellent position to pick up on unusual or suspicious lesions in the mouth and refer patients on for specialist opinion.

Entry Requirements / Prerequisites

Before commencing this session you should have knowledge of:

  • Fundamental head and neck anatomy
  • Basic histopathology of salivary gland cancer and oral cancer
