Management of Oral Ulcerations course for Dental Practice



This session aims to cover the common causes of oral ulceration, as well as the management options available in both general practice and the specialist setting.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- Define oral ulceration
- Explain how to assess and examine patients with oral ulceration
- Classify the different causes of oral ulceration
- Describe how to manage simple cases of oral ulceration
- Recognise complex oral ulceration patients and know when to refer patients
Ulcers and erosions are a common clinical presentation.
There is a wide range of causes and a systematic approach to both history taking and examination is required in order to manage the patient appropriately.

Before commencing this session you should have knowledge of:
- The structure of the normal oral mucosa
After qualifying as a dentist in 2005, Dr Martyn Ormond BDS (Glas) MFDS RCS (Edin) MBBS (UoL), completed a period of General Professional Training incorporating rotations in general dental practice as well as the community and hospital dental services. Following this, he completed an undergraduate medical degree at Barts and The London Medical School.
After two years Foundation Training he took up his current post as a Specialty Doctor in Oral Medicine at Guy’s Dental Hospital.
