This session describes the diagnosis and management of gingivitis. It also explains how to distinguish gingivitis from periodontitis and when to refer the patient for specialist help.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • State what gingivitis is and its causes
  • Explain the process of plaque formation
  • Recognise the signs and symptoms of gingivitis
  • Explain to your patients about the condition and its significance
  • Explain effective treatment measures
  • Re-evaluate the patient and advise on the need for further treatment

Gingivitis is inflammation of the gums surrounding the teeth. The term is derived from the word gingiva, which refers to the mucosal tissue that lies over the alveolar bone, more commonly referred to as the gums.

Before commencing this session you should know:

  • The fundamentals of dental anatomy
  • How to perform a basic periodontal examination (BPE)
  • About current oral hygiene techniques and equipment
  • How to scale and polish teeth

Philip Greene has over 35 years experience in general and specialist practice in Periodontics, and runs a private practice in Manchester devoted to Periodontics. He is a Dental Expert Witness, author of many journal articles and presentations, and is a contributor to the Textbook of Dental Hygiene and Therapy, (Ed: Ireland, R) published by Blackwell Munksgaard. He is a member of British Society of Periodontology Education Committee and a founder member of the Expert Witness Institute.
