This session discusses the identification of failing anterior traumatised teeth in children and adolescents. It also covers the subsequent management and treatment options for failing and/or missing anterior teeth.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Identify failing traumatised permanent incisor teeth in a child or adolescent
  • Describe the benefit of a multi-disciplinary team approach to the management of these cases
  • State the different treatment options available for failing incisor teeth
  • Describe when tooth autotransplantation may be appropriate as a method of incisor tooth replacement

Over a period of nine months, treatment was provided to disinfect the root canal. (This included orthodontic extrusion to try and achieve supragingival fracture margins).

Peter Day PhD, FDS (Paeds) RCS (Eng), FRCD (Canada), PGCLTHE,
Lecturer and Consultant in Paediatric Dentistry, Leeds Dental Institute and Bradford and Airedale Salaried Dental Service

Peter started his specialist and academic training in Paediatric Dentistry in 2000 and has been in Leeds ever since. His PhD was in the field of dental trauma and was completed in 2009. It included chapters investigating the design, development and assessment of a computer database for dental trauma (CDDT), a multi-centre randomised controlled trial of two root canal medicaments for the management of avulsed and replanted teeth and a Cochrane review of the avulsion literature.

In 2009, he took a six month sabbatical working at the Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne before returning to England to take up a joint academic appointment with University of Leeds and Bradford and Airedale Salaried Dental Service.

Kate Waldon,
Dental Foundation Trainee

Kate graduated from the University of Leeds and subsequently completed dental foundation training with the Yorkshire Deanery as part of the Longitudinal scheme, splitting time between general dental practice and the Leeds Dental Institute.

She is currently working as a third year Dental Foundation Trainee with the Salaried Dental Services for Bradford District Care Trust.

Sophy Barber,
Specialty Training in Orthodontics

Sophy graduated from the University of Sheffield in 2008. Following this she completed VT in general practice, a year in Maxillofacial Surgery and a Paediatric job in the salaried dental service.

Sophy is currently in her second year of Specialty Training in Orthodontics in Leeds Dental Institute and Pinderfields Hospital. Alongside this she is completing a MSc at the University of Leeds. After completion of specialty training in 2013 Sophy plans to continue orthodontic training to consultant level.
