This session describes how to identify dental erosion and the different treatment options available.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Explain the rationale for monitoring and how best to do this
  • Identify the structural changes to eroded enamel and dentine
  • Describe different treatment options available for restoring eroded teeth
  • List clinical techniques used to restore eroded teeth
  • Identify when to apply reversible treatment modalities in simple cases
  • Explain when to use more complex treatment strategies in severe erosion

This session will discuss how best to monitor and restore worn and eroded surfaces without recourse to complex treatment modalities.

  • The aetiology and presentation of attrition, abrasion and erosion
  • The strategies to prevent erosion

Alex is a consultant and honorary senior lecturer in restorative dentistry at Liverpool University Dental Hospital. His main research interest is the epidemiology of tooth wear, especially prevalence and risk in adolescents and in eating disorders. Alex has lectured extensively across the UK and many parts of the world, reinforcing that wear and erosion are global dental problems.
