This session covers the management of dental attrition.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Describe the relationship between bruxism and attrition
  • Identify the presenting clinical features of attrition
  • Describe different treatment options available to restore teeth worn by attrition
  • Describe the Dahl approach
  • Identify when to apply reversible treatment modalities in simple cases
  • Explain when to use more complex treatment strategies in severe attrition

This session will discuss how to restore teeth worn by attrition.

Attrition may be defined as direct tooth-to-tooth wear. It differs to erosion (which is the acid dissolution of tooth substance) and abrasion (which involves other abrasives).

Entry Requirements / Prerequisites

Before commencing this session you should have:

  • Knowledge of the aetiology and presentation of attrition, abrasion and erosion
  • Completed the e-Den session in Module 8 Restoration of Teeth/Tooth Surface Loss/Management of Erosion (141-0365)

Alex is a consultant and honorary senior lecturer in restorative dentistry at Liverpool University Dental Hospital. His main research interest is the epidemiology of tooth wear, especially prevalence and risk in adolescents and in eating disorders. Alex has lectured extensively across the UK and many parts of the world, reinforcing that wear and erosion are global dental problems.
