This session covers the management of dental abrasion.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • List the presenting clinical features of abrasion
  • Describe different treatment options available to restore teeth worn by abrasion
  • Explain the difference between abrasion and abfraction

This session will discuss how to restore teeth worn by abrasion.

Abrasion may be defined as wear of teeth by any substance other than tooth substance.

It differs to erosion which is the acid dissolution of tooth substance, and attrition which involves teeth rubbing and wearing against each other. Abrasion may be difficult to distinguish from erosion and attrition. The common site for abrasion is cervical, although any part of the tooth can be abraded.

Before commencing this session you should have:

  • Knowledge of the aetiology and presentation of attrition, abrasion and erosion
  • Completed the e-Den session in Module 8 Restoration of Teeth/Tooth Surface Loss/Management of Erosion (141-0365)

His main research interest is the epidemiology of tooth wear, especially prevalence and risk in adolescents and in eating disorders. Alex has lectured extensively across the UK and many parts of the world, reinforcing that wear and erosion are global dental problems.
