Management and Referral for Patients with or at Risk of Genetic Conditions course for GPs
This session will describe the role of the GP in the coordinated management of patients with a family history of a genetic condition, the information resources available and the referral process.

Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- Describe how to access information about genetic conditions and their management guidelines
- Clarify the organisation of specialist services for genetic conditions
- Describe how to refer patients to a specialist Genetics Centre and how the referral is processed
- Understand the role of Primary Care in the management of patients with a genetic condition, including sources of genetic support
Previous sessions have shown how to take a genetic family history and identify a family with a genetic condition. This session highlights some of the indications for referral and explains how to refer the family to a specialist clinical genetics service.

Chirag is currently a Consultant Clinical Geneticist for Genetic Health Queensland, Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.
He studied Medicine at St. George’s Hospital Medical School in London, where his intercalated BSc was in Medical Genetics. After basic medical training in Paediatrics in London, and attaining his MRCPCH in 2006, he entered higher medical training in Clinical Genetics in 2007.
Peter Farndon has retired from his longstanding clinical, teaching, research, policy development and committee roles in genetics but is still actively involved in the British Society for Genetic Medicine.
Formerly Professor of Clinical Genetics and Consultant Clinical Geneticist in Birmingham, Peter was involved with the practical application of genetics for patients for nearly 25 years. He has had a long standing interest in genetic education, and in 2004 set up the NHS National Genetics Education and Development Centre, leading the team as the Centre’s director.
