Local Anaesthetics course
This session describes the pharmacology of local anaesthetics and their clinical uses as analgesics.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- Describe the ionic basis for the development and propagation of an action potential in a sensory nerve
- Outline the mechanism of action of local anaesthetics
- Explain side-effects and toxicity associated with local anaesthetic use
- Identify common routes of administration
- Describe the use of local anaesthetics in neuropathic pain
Local anaesthetics are drugs that cause a temporary loss of sensation or feeling in a limited area of the body, by reversibly blocking pain conduction in nerve fibres.
Emma has been surgical lead pharmacist at Aintree since 2006. In this role she takes a particular interest in pain management and is an active member of the trust acute pain team. This involves writing and implementing guidelines, advice provision and independent prescribing to ensure patients receive effective and timely analgesia.
She is also a North West tutor for the Centre for Pharmacy Postgraduate Education (CPPE) and has written modules for them on pain management.
Emma is a committee member of the UK Clinical Pharmacy Association (UKCPA) pain specialist interest group, which is a national forum and resource for clinical pharmacists.
