Left to Right Shunts course for Medical Doctors
This session aims to briefly describe the different types of left to right shunt defects and how to approach diagnosis and management.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- List the different types of left to right shunt defects
- Describe the anatomy and natural history for each defect
- Outline the clinical features and examination findings associated with each shunt
- List the investigations used and relevant findings
- Explain how to manage each type of left to right shunt defect
Before commencing this session, you should:
- Have knowledge of the basic principles of cardiac anatomy
- Have knowledge of foetal cardiac physiology
- Be able to interpret electrocardiograms
Gurjinder Dahel, MBChB, MRCPCH, is a graduate of Birmingham Medical School. She trained in Paediatrics in the West Midlands and completed her specialist training in 2017.
Dr Dahel completed her cardiology training in Singapore and Birmingham Children’s Hospital in the UK. She is currently working as a Consultant Paediatrician with an Expertise in Cardiology.
Dr Dahel has an interest in training and as a trainee acted as a RCPCH and regional trainee representative for her Deanery and was a personal mentor for medical students at Birmingham Medical School. She has presented at various national and international meetings and is an active member of the RCPCH media team.
