Introduction to Obesity course for GPs
This session aims to provide you with an overview of overweight and obesity in children and adults in the UK. Obesity is a serious and wide spread public health issue, which has a disproportionate impact on the most deprived families. This session will touch upon the physical, psychological and social issues that can manifest due to overweight and obesity, and the health benefits of weight reduction and maintenance.

Learning Objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- Describe the prevalence of obesity in England
- Describe the main causes of obesity
- Explain the impact of excess weight on health and wellbeing in adults and children
- Define overweight and obesity in adults and children
- Identify the health benefits of weight reduction in adults and weight maintenance in children
The prevalence of obesity amongst the adult population, in England, has increased from 13% of men and 16% of women in 1993 to 27% for both men and women in 2015.
Since 2013, Jamie has led Public Health England’s Obesity and Healthy Weight team and is responsible for working across PHE and with national and local partners, to develop and deliver action to prevent and tackle excess weight.
This includes action on preventative whole systems approaches; developing the evidence base and support to local public health teams on weight management services and contributing towards strategic planning.
A Registered Public Health Nutritionist, he has worked within Government nutrition since 1998, including providing expert advice across Government on school food, cooking skills and early years nutrition. In addition, to Jamie’snutrition expertise, he also studiedfor aMSc in Health Policy, graduating with distinction from Imperial College London. Jamie was awarded the Nutrition Society’s Public Health Nutrition Medal 2015, in recognition of excellence in public health nutrition.
