Introduction to Dental Trauma course for Dental Practice
This session describes the prevalence, causes and risk factors for dento-alveolar trauma. The need for a specific trauma history as well as an accurate diagnosis will also be highlighted.

- Outline the key points of importance that should be covered in a trauma history and examination
- Identify different injury types
As dental injury is so common and may have profound psychosocial, economic and functional implications, it is essential that general dental practitioners are competent and confident in its diagnosis and management.
Before commencing this session you should have some experience and knowledge of history-taking for patients presenting with acute or previous dento-alveolar trauma.
The undergraduate dental curriculum will have covered this topic, but a good summary can be found in the following text: Andreasen JO, Andreasen FM, Andersson L, eds. Textbook and Color Atlas of Traumatic Injuries to the Teeth. 4th edn. Wiley-Blackwell, 2007.
Professor Helen Rodd qualified at Bristol University in 1988 and then completed three years of general professional training. She completed specialist training in paediatric dentistry in Sheffield in 1997 before undertaking three years of full-time research as an MRC research fellow. Helen was awarded her PhD in 2000 and was made a senior lecturer/honorary consultant at Sheffield Dental School in 2002. She was appointed Professor in 2006.
Helen’s main area of research interest to date has focused on the innervation and inflammation of human primary and permanent teeth. This has involved largely laboratory-based enquiry. More recently she has been undertaking multidisciplinary studies with colleagues in the social sciences to gain an insight into the impact of dental conditions and related treatment in children and young people. This work has involved a range of child-centred methodologies.
Helen has held a number of national and international roles including Editor of the International Journal of Paediatric Dentistry; Member of the Specialist Advisory Committee in Paediatric Dentistry; Examiner for the ISFE in paediatric dentistry, President of the British Society of Paediatric Dentistry, and Chairman of the scientific committee of the 2015 meeting of the International Association of Paediatric Dentistry.
Fiona Gilchrist is a Clinical Lecturer in Paediatric Dentistry at the University of Sheffield.
She completed her NHS training in 2009 and is currently undertaking a PhD investigating the impact of dental caries on children, from the child’s perspective. Fiona graduated from the University of Glasgow in 1998 and completed two years of General Professional Training before spending three years as a Senior House Officer in Glasgow Dental Hospital and School. She then completed specialist training in paediatric dentistry at the Edinburgh Dental Institute in 2006 and following this spent six months as a Senior Registrar in the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne before moving to Sheffield.
Fiona’s interests include research with children, management of dental trauma, conscious sedation and undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. She is currently the assistant editor of the Clinical Effectiveness Bulletin of the British Society of Paediatric Dentistry.
