This session will describe the principles of intravenous cannulation for conscious sedation in dentistry, including the equipment required, the cannulation technique and complications which may arise.

Learning objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • list the preferred sites for intravenous cannulation and describe the advantages and disadvantages of these sites
  • list the equipment required for IV cannulation
  • describe the technique of IV cannulation
  • list the complications which may occur as a result of IV cannulation

The success of intravenous sedation relies on establishing appropriate intravenous access. The presence of an indwelling cannula is mandatory for safe sedation practice.

  • anatomy relevant to conscious sedation

Dr Kathy Wilson is an Associate Specialist in Dental Sedation at Newcastle Dental Hospital.

Currently lecturing in the field of dental sedation and special care dentistry at undergraduate and postgraduate level, Kathy has extensive clinical experience in management of the anxious dental patient.

Kathy is also part of the Module Editorial Team at e-Den, and is Module Editor for Module 3 Anxiety and Pain Control in Dentistry.
