This session is a guide to intraosseous anaesthesia. It will include background theory, indications and clinical application.

Learning objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • list the indications and contraindications for intraosseous anaesthesia
  • describe the basic technique of intraosseous anaesthesia
  • discuss the difference between the three most popular intraosseous anaesthetic systems currently on the market

Intraosseous anaesthesia is a technique in which local anaesthetic solution is deposited directly into the cancellous portion of the bone.

Entry Requirements / Prerequisites

Before commencing this session you should be familiar with:

  • intra-oral anatomy and location of important structures
  • basic dental morphology

Zaid Esmail BDS (Hons), MFDS, RCS (Ed.),
SHO Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

Dr. Esmail qualified with honours from the University of Liverpool in 2008.

Appointed to Newcastle Dental Hospital in 2008, he underwent General Professional Training.

Since 2010, Dr. Esmail has practiced as Senior House Officer in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Royal London Hospital.
