Intraligamentary anaesthesia course for Dental Practitioners
This session provides an overview to intraligamentary anaesthesia. It also describes the method of administration, the indications for use and the advantages and disadvantages of this technique. This session was reviewed by Kathy Wilson in May 2015.
Learning objectives
By the end of this session you should be able to:
- list the indications and contraindications for intraligamentary anaesthesia
- describe the method of administration of intraligamentary anaesthesia
- list the advantages and disadvantages of intraligamentary injections
Intraligamentary anaesthesia is regarded as a supplementary technique used when conventional methods have failed to provide adequate anaesthesia. However some practitioners use these techniques as first line anaesthesia.
Before commencing this session you should have knowledge of:
- conventional maxillary and mandibular techniques for the administration of local anaesthetics (for example, by completing Module 3 Anxiety and pain control in dentistry/Dental local anaesthetics/Introduction to dental local anaesthesia (141-0120)
- the anatomy of the alveolus
- the pharmacological basis of local anaesthesia
Jennifer Harte obtained her BDS at Newcastle University in 2008 and her MFDS at Edinburgh in 2010, whilst working as a General Professional Trainee. She is currently working at Bristol Dental Hospital as a Senior House Officer in Oral Surgery and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
