Intensive Care Nursing

This unit of study explores advanced assessment and management of patients requiring intensive care nursing. Topics explored in this unit of study include multi-organ dysfunction syndrome, infection control issues in intensive care, advanced concepts in haemodynamic monitoring, further exploration of mechanical ventilation principles and advanced strategies, advanced cardiac management, management of major trauma and renal replacement therapies.

Single unit of study only available for graduates of Graduate Certificate in Critical Care Nursing or equivalent
Theme 1: Multi organ dysfunction syndrome
Explain nursing strategies that promote person-centred care, comfort and safety in a technology-intense critical care setting
Theme 2: Mechanical ventilation
Integrate health assessment and analysis of findings that enable effective critical care for persons with rapidly changing health status
Theme 3: Advanced concepts in invasive monitoring
Appraise the use of technology to diagnose, monitor and treat people with major trauma and multi organ dysfunction syndromes
Theme 4: Infection prevention and control
Discuss advanced and emerging systemic extra-corporal support mechanisms needed to save and support life
Theme 5: Advanced cardiac management
Analyse multi-disciplinary care objectives inclusive of disability, mental health and cultural safety dimensions in complex clinical situations
Theme 6: Extra corporeal support
Critically reflect on own practice and the need to maintain a cohesive, coordinated and high-functioning intensive care team
