This session will focus on injury prevention and safety in children of school age. It will explore road safety, sun exposure, second-hand smoke exposure and Internet and social media safety. It will also consider the safe management of medication in school for children with health needs.

Learning objectives

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Recognise the risk factors for unintentional injuries in school-age children
  • Describe road safety risks and measures implemented for reducing them
  • Outline the risks of second-hand smoke and strategies for reducing smoking initiation and smoke exposure
  • Identify the health risks of excess sun exposure in school-age children and consider sun protection measures
  • Discuss the risks posed by the Internet and social media and consider protective interventions for school-age children
  • Describe the safe management of medication in school for children with health needs

Her professional qualifications include: Registered General Nurse from St. Bartholomew’s Hospital, London; Registered Sick Children’s Nurse from Portsmouth University; Specialist Community Public Health Nurse/BSc [Hons] Public Health Practice from the University of Southampton.
