Injury Prevention course
This session aims to raise awareness of the causes, risk factors and context of unintentional child injury. Understanding both the conceptual and practical approaches to effective unintentional child injury prevention forms an integral part of this session.
Learning objectives
By the end of this session you will be able to:
- Recognise the causes, risk factors and context of childhood injury
- Describe the significance of appropriate risk assessment including the possibility of child abuse or neglect
- Make sound judgements regarding appropriate preventive and health promotion actions that aim to reduce the likelihood of the injury occurring
This session summarises the nature of the public health challenge posed by accidental injuries in children. It outlines the key approaches to injury prevention; indicates the wide range of available evidence-based countermeasures and suggests ways in which practitioners can help introduce measures to prevent injuries both in the course of their routine duties and in partnership with others.

Have a basic understanding of child development
David Stone is a public health physician based at Glasgow University where he has held a Personal Chair of Paediatric Epidemiology since 2000. He chaired the child injury group of the Accidental Injury Task Force of the UK Department of Health (2000-2002) and was Chair of the International Society for Child and Adolescent Injury Prevention (2000-2003). He has been Injury Prevention Adviser to the UK Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health since 2003.
